Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Brochure

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) is one of the core departments of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) right from its inception in 1960 as erstwhile Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) with the under-graduate programme. The post-graduate programme specialized in Power and Energy Systems started in the year 1992. Research programmes leading to doctoral degree (Ph.D) were introduced in the year 2003. The department has well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories to augment the coursework and enhance the research potentials. It has a dynamic group of faculties with profound experience in academics, research and industry, dedicated in teaching-learning process and  actively engaged in the cutting edge R&D activities like  Smart Grid Operation & Control, Power Electronics & Renewable Energy, Biomedical Imaging & Signal Processing, Electric Vehicle & Wireless Power Transfer, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, etc. Recognitions like Young Faculty Research Fellowship and POSOCO award for research publications have been received by the faculty. Various externally sponsored research projects funded by DST, SERB, MNRE, CPRI, DELL, CDAC, Infineon, Texas Instruments, Schneider Electric, L&T, Robert Bosch, MeitY etc. has been undergoing in the department over the years. The department also undertakes many consultancy projects from industry and other organisations. A good number of publications including patents, international journals & conferences comes throughout the year from its academicians and students.

The department has academic programs with about 500 undergraduates including first year students and 110 postgraduate students. There are about 80 Ph. D. scholars pursuing research in the department, as full-time and part-time registrants. These academic program’s curriculum offers the students, opportunity for study and research, both theoretical and experimental, in a wide variety of subjects spanning under the traditional disciplines of electrical engineering as well as opens up to the new fields of study.  Many senior research students pursue internships and fellowships in prestigious institutes worldwide under Mitacs Global Link Research Internship, etc. Placement statistics points to higher number of the graduate and undergraduate students recruited under various multinational core-companies as well as IT companies from the department. Throughout the department’s history, its faculty, students, and alumni have made major contributions and advancement in fields of academia, research and technology industry.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering strives to be a Center of Excellence in education committed for rendering the best service to the society through teaching, research and developmental work.

M1: To produce graduates with a strong foundation in the basic sciences and mathematics that will enable them to identify and solve electrical engineering problems.
M2: To provide students with a solid foundation in Electrical & Electronics Engineering that prepares them for life-long careers and professional growth in fields of their choice.
M3: To provide our students with the basic skills to communicate effectively and to develop the ability to function as members of multidisciplinary teams.
M4: To provide our students with a broad-based education so that they can appreciate diversity of opinion, better understand ethical issues, and develop a more global perspective.
M5: To provide an ecosystem to students and staff with a relevant engineering design experience through curriculum involving industry-interactions bridging the gap between theory and practice.
