The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established right from the inception of the institute i.e., on August 6, 1960, with the under-graduate programme. The post-graduate programme in Power and Energy Systems was started in the year 1992. Formal reseach activities leading to a doctoral degree (PhD) were introduced in the year 2003. The department has well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories to augment the coursework and enhance the research potentials. The department has faculty who are not only dedicated in teaching learning process, but also are actively engaged in the research and development activities with externally sponsored projects from various funding agencies like DST, SERB, MNRE, CPRI, DELL, CDAC, Infineon, Texas Instruments, Schneider Electric, L&T, Robert Bosch, MeitY, to name a few. They have good number of publications in many international journals & conferences. The department also undertakes many consultancy projects from industry and other organisations. Recognitions like Young Faculty Research Fellowship and award for Research Publications from Government agencies have been received by the faculty.

There are several full-time Ph. D. scholars pursuing research in the department, in addition to the part-time registrants. Many final year students take up internships at foreign institutes such as University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois Urbana, EPFL Switzerland, University of Windsor, under Mitacs Global Link Research Internship, etc. Multinational Core-companies as well as IT companies have recruited students from the department.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering strives to be a Center of Excellence in education committed for rendering the best service to the society through teaching, research and developmental work.

M1: To produce graduates with a strong foundation in the basic sciences and mathematics that will enable them to identify and solve electrical engineering problems.
M2: To provide students with a solid foundation in Electrical & Electronics Engineering that prepares them for life-long careers and professional growth in fields of their choice.
M3: To provide our students with the basic skills to communicate effectively and to develop the ability to function as members of multidisciplinary teams.
M4: To provide our students with a broad-based education so that they can appreciate diversity of opinion, better understand ethical issues, and develop a more global perspective.
M5: To provide an ecosystem to students and staff with a relevant engineering design experience through curriculum involving industry-interactions bridging the gap between theory and practice.
