        • Visited FREEDM (Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management) System Research center under Dept. of Electrical and Computing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA for 6 weeks, from 6th Jun, 2013 to 17th July 2013 to undertake research on renewable energy integration with grid and its challenges on protection system.

        • Under invitation from, Dr.Subhashish Bhattacharya, ABB Term Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA.

        • Summary of work carried out: The Transient Network Analyzer (TNA) helps in carrying out various studies on dynamic and transient stability studies in a laboratory environment. If such a TNA is integrated with UPFC / SSSC / STATCOM, it will greatly support research work in the area of FACTS. The FREEDM lab at NCSU had this facility, and several interesting research works were in progress using this TNA. Out of these, the topic of interest chosen was “interaction of STACOM with distance relay”. The major objective of study was to obtain the various fault transient condition data under various operating conditions of grid with / without STACOM under varied compensation levels. The TNA in the FREEDM lab was configured for actual grid configuration existing in one of the state utility network. This data has been used as test set, for testing newly proposed adaptive distance relay. This new relay has been developed earlier as a part of research work carried out at EE Dept, NITK. These investigations helped in understanding STATCOM interaction with distance relays and research work in developing new relaying schemes.

    • 2008-09

      • Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan

        • Visited Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan for 6 weeks, from 18th May, 2008 to 6th July 2008 to undertake research interaction on application of DSP processor for control of AC Drives.

        • Under invitation from, Dr.Kichiro Yamamoto, Assoc. Prof., Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Kagoshima University, 1-21-40 Korimoto, Kagoshima, 890-0065 JAPAN

        • Summary of work carried out: The wind turbine emulator helps in carrying out various studies on wind power based generating system. It essentially helps in developmental studies on controllers to handle wind gradient effect, tower shadow effect and issues in grid connected operation & control. The research laboratory in Kagoshima University had facility and expertise in this area. During the research interaction, modeling and simulation of wind turbine emulator was taken during first phase. The additional functional blocks were included in developed model than the previous version where they were earlier realized as separate hardware. The model dynamics were simulated using PSIM software This was followed with experimental studies in laboratory using existing wind turbine emulator.
